The Mandate of Stewardship (Genesis 2)

The Hebrew word for 'dress' is 'abad,' which literally means to serve or work, and 'keep' is 'shamar,' which means to guard, preserve, and protect. This reveals that our dominion over the Earth is not a license for reckless exploitation, but a calling to serve and protect the creation.

Clean energy and resource conservation are direct applications of this original mandate. When we seek energy sources that do not pollute, deface, or destroy God's handiwork, we are acting as faithful stewards. We are working the garden in a way that respects the Owner's design and keeps it healthy for the future.

The Earth is the Lord's (Psalm 24)

A primary hurdle to environmental stewardship is the mindset of ownership. We often treat the Earth as if it belongs to us, to do with as we please. But Psalm 24:1 corrects this posture: 'The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.' Every river, every gust of wind, every ray of sunlight, and every mineral deposit belongs to God. We are merely trustees.

When we look at clean energy through this lens, it changes from a political debate to a matter of worship. If the Earth is God's property, then how we treat it is a reflection of how we feel about Him. Littering, polluting, and wasteful consumption are forms of disrespect to the Creator. Utilizing clean, sustainable resources honors the One who made them.

Caring for the Land and Neighbors (Numbers 35)

In the Old Testament law, God gave specific instructions about maintaining the cleanliness and health of the land. In Numbers 35:34, He instructs: 'Defile not therefore the land which ye shall inhabit, wherein I dwell: for I the Lord dwell among the children of Israel.' The presence of God was tied to the condition of the land. A polluted, defiled land was unfitting for the dwelling place of a holy God.

Furthermore, caring for the environment is a vital way to love our neighbors. Air and water pollution disproportionately affect the poor and vulnerable. By advocating for clean energy and reducing ecological damage, we protect our neighbors from the sickness and displacement caused by environmental degradation. Environmental stewardship is an act of Christian charity.

The Divine Accounting of Creation (Revelation 11)

God does not look lightly upon the destruction of His world. In Revelation 11:18, in a vision of the final judgment, it is declared that the time has come for God to 'destroy them which destroy the earth.' This is a sobering reminder that God holds us accountable for how we treat His creation. Our actions have consequences, both temporal and eternal.

The goal of clean energy is to find ways to sustain human life and flourishing without destroying the very systems that God designed to support us. As we look forward to the new heavens and the new earth, we should live in a way that prefigures that restoration, treating the current creation with the reverence it deserves.
