What Does It Mean to Have Faith in God? Trusting Beyond Sight

The Definition of Biblical Faith (Hebrews 11)

Hebrews 11:1 provides the hallmark definition of faith: 'Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.' The Greek word translated as 'substance' is 'hypostasis,' which was used in ancient legal documents to describe a title deed. Faith is not a hopeful wish; it is the absolute assurance that what God has promised belongs to us, even before we see it manifest in the physical world.

This kind of faith is pleasing to God because it honors His character. Hebrews 11:6 declares: 'But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.' True faith acknowledges both God's existence and His goodness. It trusts that seeking Him is never in vain, regardless of current difficulties.

Trusting Wholeheartedly (Proverbs 3)

To have faith in God means choosing His wisdom over our own. Proverbs 3:5-6 instructs: 'Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.' The phrase 'lean not' warning us against placing our security in our own logic, resources, or experiences.

When we lean on our own understanding, we are easily shaken by changing circumstances. But when we lean entirely on the Lord, we are anchored. Faith does not mean we don't plan or use our minds; it means we submit those plans to God, acknowledging His authority in every detail and trusting Him to guide our steps.

How Faith is Cultivated (Romans 10)

A common struggle is the feeling of having 'weak' faith. We wonder how to get more of it. Paul gives the answer in Romans 10:17: 'So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.' Faith is not something we pump up within ourselves through sheer willpower. It is a response to hearing God's voice.

When we saturate our minds with Scripture, we learn about God's faithfulness in the past. We see how He kept His covenants, how He protected His people, and how Jesus conquered death. As we hear these truths, our confidence in God grows. If you want to strengthen your faith, spend less time listening to the anxieties of the world and more time listening to the Word of God.

Faith in Action (James 2)

True faith is never passive or merely intellectual. James 2:17 cautions: 'Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.' If we claim to trust God but our actions do not change, our faith is only a theory. Faith is demonstrated through active, daily obedience.

Abraham's faith was verified when he was willing to offer up Isaac; Noah's faith was verified when he built the ark. Their faith had hands and feet. Having faith in God means that when He tells us to forgive, we forgive; when He tells us to give, we give. Our actions prove what our hearts truly believe.
