The Need for Rescue: The Sin Problem

To understand the beauty of salvation, we must first understand the depth of our need. The Bible begins its explanation of salvation by diagnosing the human condition: 'for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God' (Romans 3:23).

Sin is not just making mistakes or breaking rules; it is a relational departure from God. It is choosing to be our own gods, directing our own lives. The consequence of this rebellion is spiritual death and separation from the Source of life: 'For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord' (Romans 6:23). We are in a deep valley, unable to climb out on our own.

The Romans Road: A Clear Pathway

Over the centuries, Christians have used a sequence of verses from the Book of Romans — known as the 'Romans Road' — to explain the gospel clearly:

1. The Problem: Romans 3:23 declares our sinfulness, and Romans 6:23 outlines the penalty (death). 2. The Provision: Romans 5:8 shows God's love: 'But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.' 3. The Response: Romans 10:9-10 reveals how to receive the gift: 'If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.' This road leads from condemnation to complete reconciliation.

Saved by Grace, Not by Human Effort

Almost every religion in the world teaches a version of self-salvation: do enough good works, follow enough laws, and you will earn favor with the divine. The Bible stands unique in its declaration that salvation is entirely unearned:

'For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast' (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Grace is receiving what we do not deserve (God's forgiveness and friendship) while Jesus paid the price we could not pay. We do not work *for* our salvation; we work *from* our salvation, obeying God out of love and gratitude rather than fear and duty.

Confession and Belief: The Two Sides of Faith

Romans 10:9 outlines a two-fold response to the gospel: confession and belief. Confessing 'Jesus is Lord' is a statement of loyalty. In the Roman Empire, saying 'Lord' was reserved for Caesar. Confessing Jesus meant declaring that He, not Caesar (and not ourselves), is the ultimate King of our lives.

Believing in the heart that 'God raised him from the dead' means placing our trust in the historical reality and saving power of the resurrection. It is not just mental assent to a fact; it is a deep-seated conviction that Jesus is alive, that He has conquered death, and that He has the authority to give us new life.

The Great Love Behind the Gift

John 3:16 explains the motivation behind the entire plan of salvation: 'For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.'

Salvation was not forced upon a reluctant God. It was not a backup plan. It was the deliberate overflow of the Father's love for a broken world. God did not send His Son to condemn us, but to rescue us. When you look at the cross, you see the extreme measure of God's love, demonstrating that you are valued, wanted, and redeemable.
