Encourage Yourself in the Lord: When No One Else Can Lift You Up

The Story Behind the Verse: David at Ziklag

To understand 1 Samuel 30:6, you need to feel the weight of what David was carrying. He and his warriors returned from a march to find their city, Ziklag, burned to the ground. Their wives and children had been taken captive by the Amalekites. Everything was gone — their homes, their families, their security.

And then it got worse. David's own men — the same warriors who had followed him through years of exile — talked about stoning him. They needed someone to blame, and David was the leader. In a single moment, David lost his home, his family, his allies, and nearly his life.

And then comes one of the most remarkable lines in all of Scripture: 'But David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.' Not in his soldiers. Not in his strategy. Not in his track record. In the Lord. He went directly to the Source when every human source had dried up.

What Does It Mean to Encourage Yourself in the Lord?

The Hebrew word used here — 'chazaq' — means to strengthen, to seize hold of, to fortify. David did not passively hope for encouragement. He actively seized it from God. He grabbed hold of what he knew to be true about God's character and refused to let go.

This is not positive thinking. It is not self-help. It is the deliberate act of reminding your soul of realities that your feelings are trying to deny. When your emotions say 'God has abandoned you,' you remember Psalms 23: 'Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, You are with me.' When your circumstances say 'It is over,' you remember Joshua 1:9: 'Be strong and courageous, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.'

David had a history with God — the lion, the bear, the giant. He drew from that history. Your history with God is your personal arsenal of encouragement. Every answered prayer, every moment of provision, every season you survived that you thought would kill you — those are the stones in your sling.

Practical Ways to Encourage Yourself When You Are Alone

Encouragement is not a feeling that arrives on its own. It is a discipline you practice until it becomes instinct. Here are ways to strengthen yourself in the Lord when human encouragement is absent:

• Speak Scripture aloud. There is power in hearing truth in your own voice. Nehemiah 8:10 says 'the joy of the LORD is your strength.' Say it until your soul believes it.
• Write down what God has done. Keep a journal of answered prayers and moments of provision. On your worst day, read it.
• Sing — even badly. Paul and Silas sang hymns in prison. Music bypasses the rational mind and reaches the spirit directly.
• Recall a specific moment when God came through. Not a general truth — a specific memory. Hold it in your mind like David held the stone before he threw it.
• Pray the Psalms. When you cannot compose your own prayers, let David and the other Psalmists pray for you. They have already put your feelings into words.

The Joy of the Lord Is Your Strength

Nehemiah 8:10 gives us a phrase that has become almost a cliché — 'the joy of the LORD is your strength.' But in its original context, it was spoken to a people who were weeping because they finally heard God's Word after years of exile and understood how far they had fallen.

Nehemiah told them to stop weeping. Not because their grief was wrong, but because the joy of being in God's presence again was stronger than the sorrow of what they had lost. This is the kind of joy that strengthens — not happiness based on circumstances, but a deep, settled confidence in God's character that outlasts every storm.

When you encourage yourself in the Lord, you are tapping into this joy. It is not denial. It is perspective. It is choosing to see your situation through the lens of God's sovereignty rather than through the lens of your pain.
