Serving the Lord Together as a Household

Joshua's declaration in Joshua 24:15 is a cornerstone for Christian households: 'but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.' Joshua was speaking to a nation tempted by foreign gods, challenging them to make a definitive choice. He made the spiritual direction of his household a priority.

Serving the Lord together as a family is not just about attending church services. It is about the culture we build at home. It means prioritizing kindness over success, service over selfishness, and regular prayer over constant distraction. When a household decides to center itself on God, it finds a shared purpose that outlasts any temporary storm.

The Blessing of Unity in a Distracted World

Psalm 133:1 declares, 'Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!' In our modern, fast-paced world, family members can easily become like ships passing in the night—living under the same roof but disconnected by work, school, and separate screens.

Scripture tells us that unity is both good (beneficial) and pleasant (delightful). Cultivating this unity requires intentional effort. It means setting aside regular times to eat, talk, and pray together without distractions, building a space where every family member feels heard and valued.

Resolving Conflict with Grace and Forgiveness

Because family members see us at our worst, the home is often where conflict arises most easily. The Apostle Paul addresses this directly in Ephesians 4:31-32: 'Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger... be put away from you... And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.'

A healthy family is not one that never fights, but one that knows how to resolve conflict with grace. True forgiveness means refusing to hold onto past offenses or use them as weapons in future arguments. We forgive our family members not because they deserve it, but because we have been deeply forgiven by God.

• Be kind and tenderhearted: listen to understand rather than to defend.
• Put away bitterness: address grievances quickly rather than letting them fester.
• Forgive as Christ forgave: offer unconditional grace to restore relationships.

Worshipping and Growing in the Normal Rhythms

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 gives parents a beautiful blueprint for spiritual training: 'And these words... shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.'

Faith formation does not require formal lectures. It happens in the normal rhythms of daily life. Talking about God's goodness at the dinner table, praying for a friend during a car ride, or reading a Bible story before bed are simple ways to weave truth into the fabric of your children's lives.
